Ontario Barn Preservation

A non-profit group, preserving Ontario’s rural history one barn at a time! #SaveOntarioBarns

Ontario’s historic barns are masterpieces of craftsmanship, constructed without nails or modern tools. Skilled carpenters relied on mortise-and-tenon joinery, wooden pegs, and hand-hewn beams to assemble frames that have stood for over a century. These artisans often learned through apprenticeships and passed down techniques through generations, imbuing barns with a sense of lineage and pride. Their attention to detail—like chamfered edges and decorative braces—elevated utility into artistry.

Unfortunately, many of these specialized skills are vanishing. As newer generations move away from manual trades and technological advancements favor speed over tradition, the knowledge of traditional barn construction is fading. Ontario Barn Preservation recognizes the urgency of documenting and promoting these methods. By involving heritage carpenters and supporting hands-on restoration projects, we can revive these techniques and inspire a new wave of craftspeople to value and continue this proud legacy.
